LTA 154: June 2026
Despite there only being two main stories, this is marathon show! The show starts with just one pieces of followup, then rushes through some regulatory, legal, and HR news before featuring just a few highlights in Apple’s services and original content. All to make as much room as possible for the main stories. The first is the mega-sized WWDC 2026 news, and the second is Apple’s hardware price increases. The show finishes with just a few smaller Apple-related stories that made the news in June.

- Parental Controls: Apple adds new parental controls across platforms — www.cultofmac.com/…
- Apple’s philosophy is to empower parents to parent, rather than having smartphones replace parents
- “Our approach to helping families create safer digital experiences is grounded in the belief that every child is unique, that’s why we build simple and intuitive tools, based on expert guidance, to let parents tailor their kids’ digital journey.” — Dr. Sumbul Desai, Apple VP of Health & Fitness
- Apple have created a dedicated page for parents: Child Safety — Apple
- Apple developed the suite of tools with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP)
- Family and child accounts are the corner stone of the system — easier to create child accounts, and they will initialise with expert-recommended defaults
- Parents decide what apps child accounts can install (including features allowing children to request apps)
- Parents get to control who kids can contact (through 1st-party apps)
- Parents can control where kids browse (in Safari at least), including mechanism for kids to request permission for specific sites
- Screentime have been completely re-designed (so it actually works!) with allowances
- Many of these ‘new’ tools are actually proper re-implementation of existing tools that have been frustrating parents for years.
- Initially, only first-party apps will get good coverage, but Apple have made a whole suite of APIs available to empower developers to extend these features into their apps.

- 🇪🇺 Understanding the EU Siri AI Exception:
- The scope of the unavailability is smaller than some headlines imply:
- It’s specifically Siri AI that’s not available (rather than Apple Intelligence)
- Only iOS is affected, because it’s designated as a gatekeeper, while macOS is not
- Because AppleWatch and CarPlay are totally dependent on iOS, they’re affected too, but because of technical decisions Apple made, not because they are gatekeepers
- The EU replied to Apple’s press release with their own spin on things: EU Says Apple Chose Not to Launch Siri AI Instead of Following DMA Rules — www.macobserver.com/…
- “The decision not to roll out Siri AI in the EU is Apple’s and Apple’s only. Apple was simply unable to develop interoperability solutions that meet essential EU privacy and security standards. Instead of trying to find a suitable compliance solution, Apple simply made a request to the European Commission to be exempted from their interoperability obligations under the DMA, and this for at least 18 months. That’s not an option.” — The EU Commission
- Analysis: The Washington Post on the EU’s DMA Folly — daringfireball.net/…
- “Brussels insists the decision is “Apple’s and Apple’s only” and that nothing in its flagship Digital Markets Act forbids the launch. That’s technically true and wholly beside the point. The law requires that the moment Siri AI ships in Europe, any rival AI agent must get the same sweeping access to a user’s messages, files and chat history. Apple proposed putting in a software security layer to make that safe and offered a phased rollout to build it. According to Apple, the European Commission rejected the proposal.” — The Washington Post

- The scope of the unavailability is smaller than some headlines imply:
- Understanding the relationship between Gemini and Apple Intelligence — www.macobserver.com/… & cyberinsider.com/…
- Apple are still using their own Apple Foundation Models, some local, some in private cloud compute, Apple Intelligence is not using a Gemini Model
- Apple paid Google for the ability to fine-tune their own models using Gemini models — this is referred to as distilling (Grok is known to have distilled all the major models, but without permission or payment!)
- Apple have worked with Google to expand Private Cloud Compute to Google hardware in Google data centers, but Apple’s Privacy Guarantees remain in place

- “Last year, we had actually built a first version of this that was sort of incremental on top of the original Siri that added tool calling, and we had it working. But we didn’t feel it was really delivering on the vision and the experience that we wanted to do. We also had a design, which required much more extensive changes, and we decided to go with that. So we went back, and we rebuilt Siri from the ground up, literally, tore it to the ground, rebuilt it from the ground up.” — Mike Rockwell (Siri Engineering Lead)

It is in some ways less capable than ChatGPT or Claude, but in other ways has more potential. It’s a very different approach and I think it’s the right one for Apple.” — John Gruber

- “Although a few of the announced features undoubtedly bubbled up internally, the three-part structure of the 75-minute-long keynote was clearly reactive. Apple focused on user and developer complaints, parental concerns about technology abuse, and the embarrassment surrounding Apple Intelligence and the “more personalized” Siri it had promised two years earlier.
